Julian in Nicomedia
Such stupid, self-threatening behaviour!
His eulogies of ancient Greek ideals,
Occult claptrap, pagan temple jaunts,
Encomiums of antiquated gods,
Endless excursions to Chrysantios,
Febrile philosophy with Maximus.
Julian’s mentors have slipped up once more!
What’s the result? Gallus is worried sick,
Konstantius replete with brooding doubts.
Mardonius sees things getting out of hand,
Decides these rumours must be scotched at once.
So Julian goes trotting off to church,
A Nicomedian lector once again,
Reading the scriptures with propriety
While all applaud his Christian piety.
