Colours of Twilight
Purple
Lost on the mountain,
Someone is singing
To Salvation Jane[1].
Green
Concealed by rushes,
A stream chuckles softly,
Hiding its silver.
White
Wild jasmine thickets
Swim ghostly and perfumed
In the ruin’d garden.
Yellow
The man in the moon
Leaps from the castled clouds
Into the cold lake.
Grey
The wind’s questing hand
Plucks the gum nuts gently.
It drinks from their cups.
Sable
Magpies creak unseen
On beaked, black branches,
Like rusty metal.
Crimson
The day’s last banner
Smouldering on the hilltop,
Yielding its colours.
Heliotrope
Answering his song,
Swift star-fire plunges
Across the night sky.
Navy-blue
Darkness stirs the dust;
The dreaming dead awake,
Drifting like thin mist.
